Dear Editor:
One of Perrysburg’s best kept secrets is the high school club rugby team. The team had another outstanding season this spring, and recently held its traditional match with alumni. The team went undefeated in their league, including two convincing victories over Toledo St. John Jesuit. They also finished fifth in the state tournament to finish their season.
There were 55 Perrysburg boys participating on the team. Rugby is an interesting sport as there seems to be a place for everyone, regardless of size. While many think of the burly boys who form the pack, there are positions for every boy regardless of height or weight. The team is losing many seniors, so there will be room for many new players next year. Some of this year’s starters had never played rugby before. It is never too late to learn the game.
As a club sport, rugby received no financial support from the school system. In this day of tight budgets, this fact should not go unnoticed. There are no letters awarded, no trophies or any other form of recognition. Instead, the boys played for fun, team camaraderie, the spirit of competition and the great after-game meals with the opposing team.
Rugby also received excellent support from the large number of high school students who attended the games as spectators. It was a great experience.
