To the Community:
Point Place Days reminds us of the many reasons why we should be proud to say Point Place is the “best place any place.” One great aspect of Point Place is our local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 16-13, serving the boaters of Point Place since 1955.
Originally based at Ottawa River Yacht Club, Flotilla 16-13 has been assisting the boating public for over fifty years through the multiple programs the Coast Guard Auxiliary participates in. Whether teaching boating classes, giving courtesy vessel examinations, or being there for boats in distress, Flotilla 16-13 has been an essential cornerstone of the Point Place boating community.
Flotilla 16-13 continues its mission to educate the boating public through the About Boating Safely Class. This class, scheduled at Alternative Plumbing, will run during Point Place Days on June 3, 10, 17 and 24, and run from 6 to 8 p.m. This class will cover the basic boating skills needed to enjoy the waters of Point Place safely as well as the legal requirements of boating for both federal and Ohio laws.
Anyone who wants to operate a boat and is born after January 1, 1982, must complete a safe boating course to operate a vessel in the State of Ohio. Also, some boat insurance companies offer discounts for those who complete the course and provide proof of passing.
If you would like to participate in the class, learn more information about joining Flotilla 16-13, or get more details regarding the safe boating class, call me at 419- 297-8934 or send an e-mail to mbeers@rockets.utoledo.edu. And, as always, enjoy the waterways of Point Place safely and remember to wear your life jacket. Michael Beers Flotilla
