SCHOOL NEWS

This year in music class, Crissey students are learning about different musicians as part of a yearlong unit called “Artist of the Month.” Our February artist of the month was Louis Armstrong. He was born August 4, 1901, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and died on July 6, 1971, in New York, New York.

Mr. Armstrong was raised mostly by his grandmother and a man who hired him for work while he was still a child. Mr. Armstrong started learning the cornet; and as a teenager he began playing regularly in street bands, clubs and riverboat cruises. Through his endeavors, Mr. Armstrong networked with many other famous jazz musicians, such as Joe “King Oliver.” In addition to his skilled trumpet performance, Mr. Armstrong is regarded for his gravelly voice, flexible improvisation abilities and scat singing. He performed for a number of radio and television programs throughout his five-decade-long musical career and was known for his charismatic stage presence and showmanship.

We all know that music enriches our lives, and we are pleased to offer our young students a meaningful introduction to artists who have shaped the music industry.
