Lucas County is gearing up for In-Demand Jobs Week 2023, Monday through Friday, May 1 to 5. “In-Demand Jobs Week is an exciting opportunity for job seekers to explore the many career paths available in Lucas County,” Commissioner Pete Gerken said. “This week-long event sheds light on the immediate hiring needs of local businesses and promotes the fastest-growing industries in Ohio.”
“In-Demand Jobs Week provides a wealth of opportunities for job seekers and students to explore rewarding careers,” Commissioner Lisa A. Sobecki said. “From roundtable discussions to employment in the hospitality industry, there is something for everyone during this weeklong celebration. Join us and take the first step toward a new career.”
The week is designed to promote Ohio’s most in-demand and fastest-growing industries through countywide hiring, education and training events. The Lucas County Department of Planning and Development announces three unique events that will take place during this week. They will provide valuable opportunities for job seekers, students and business leaders to explore rewarding careers and gain valuable skills.
All three events will be held at the Lucas County shared services building, 3737 West Sylvania Avenue.
The path to employment roundtable discussion will be Monday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This will bring together training practitioners from around the county to discuss how pre-apprenticeship programs and other training programs can lead to sustainable careers. A panel of experts will share their insights and best practices, highlighting the importance of investing in employees and creating pathways for career growth.
Doni Miller, president and CEO of Neighborhood Health Association, will moderate the roundtable, which will include the following panelists: Lee Daher, senior business representative, Carpenters Local Union No. 351 and chair of the Lucas County Area 9 Workforce Board; Alexandra Luce, talent acquisitions manager for Mercy Health; Tony Totty, president of United Auto Workers Local 14, and Robert Wagner, chair of food, nutrition, and hospitality at Owens Community College.
The Hospitality Career Expo will be Wednesday, May 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is perfect for job seekers interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality industry. The morning session, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, will include a customer service training class, followed by a career expo from 1 to 3 p.m. More than 20 employers representing hotels, restaurants and other companies will be present, offering opportunities to connect with industry professionals, learn valuable skills in customer service and explore the many career paths available in hospitality. By building awareness of the prevalence of mental illness and substance abuse disorders, business leaders can better understand the challenges their employees may be facing. Identifying common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders can help leaders recognize when an employee may need additional support or accommodations.
This session aims to provide information on services and resources that can assist individuals facing mental illness and/or substance abuse challenges.
