A finch and its hungry nestlings

A male house finch prepares to head out to forage for more food for its hungry nestlings. That food is strictly seeds and other plant foods that the parents regurgitate and feed to their young, explained Art Weber, Metroparks nature photographer.

House finch is an appropriate name for this species that was initially a western bird. Now well-established east of the Mississippi, house finches frequently construct nests and raise multiple broods–as many as six in some parts of its range–in and around structures like this nest beneath a canvas deck awning. The photograph was taken by Weber.
