Fort Meigs to host Grand Encampment

Fort Meigs has been chosen as the location for the Northwest Territory Alliance’s Grand Encampment on Saturday and Sunday, August 24 and 25.

Every five years the NWTA holds a Grand Encampment with hundreds of reenactors recreating authentic military camps and battle tactics of the American Revolution. The NWTA is comprised of individuals from throughout the United States and Canada. This year they have chosen Fort Meigs.

“The grand encampment will be even larger than the NWTA’s yearly encampments at Fort Meigs, which are part of our 60 Years War for Ohio series,” said John Thompson, the fort’s manager of historic programming.

The 60 years war is a term used to describe the 60 years of conflict over the control of the Great Lakes region beginning with the French and Indian War and continuing through the War of 1812. It ended with the Treaty of Ghent creating a permanent boundary between the United States and the British Empire, Thompson explained.

The American Revolution is an integral piece of the 60 Years War because it left unresolved questions of control in the Old Northwest between the British, Americans, French and Indigenous peoples, leading up to the War of 1812.

The encampment runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the Revolution during this living history event, which will feature military and battle demonstrations, an interactive ambush, live fife and drum concerts, an 18th century duel and hands-on activities for children.
