Fungi art exhibition to appear in Sylvania

The Hudson Gallery, 5645 North Main Street, Sylvania, is opening a new art exhibit in July. Their gallery space will be filled with new ceramic sculptures by Jordy R. Poma, a Toledo-based Peruvian chef and ceramic artist. His work reflects his life and love for nature, especially the relationship between his youth in the Peruvian jungle and his adult life in the United States. The exhibit is titled “A Fungi Experience - MyCielo.”

Poma’s work is often inspired by women in his community, specifically women who are “healers…Women that use plants and natural elements for their practices.”

Mr. Poma wrote a statement regarding the presentation of this exhibit and its significance: “The forest is not just trees, nor fungi just fungi, there is this relationship in the forest, organisms enmeshed in one another’s existence, sometimes symbiotically, often out of self-interest.

“Fungi kingdom is the third largest on the planet, some kinds of fungi are responsible for the decomposition of organic matter, that is, the mutation of death in life.

“They attach themselves to plant roots and spread out underground, in doing so, they entangle trees in a network that permeates the world, connecting and perpetuating the cycles of life.

“In difficult times, organisms find new relationships in order to survive and grow.

“Thinking this in human terms and applying that to my journey in life, I thought about my own relationships that have nurtured me through the years and taken me to where I am at this point of my life.”

There will be an Artist Reception held on Friday, July 7, from 5 to 8 p.m at the gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public during its display period, which will end on July 22.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
