Learning Coping Strategies
Like all parents, me included, Holloway staff recognizes that these past months have been challenging for everyone. That is why our district and school staff provide additional support and instruction to assist students beyond traditional academic instruction.
One way is through our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons. Throughout the month of January, Holloway students were provided opportunities to learn new coping strategies that can be added to our school’s “Zones of Regulation” toolbox. These strategies can be useful in many situations, like when a child is feeling anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated or upset.
Students were introduced to their “inner coach,” and we discussed what a great coach says to motivate their athletes. The same statements a coach would use to encourage their team can be used inside our own mind to help us persevere during challenges. The more we say, “I can do this,” and “I just haven’t learned this yet,” the more we believe in ourselves and our abilities.
Students also identified their happy place. We talked about how it can be helpful to picture this place (what you would see, hear, feel, etc.) when you want to calm yourself down.
2022 Summer Spark Programming
Springfield Local Schools is excited to kick off a new summer program entitled, Summer Spark, for students entering grades kindergarten through eighth. The program will provide students with access to books, learning stations and outreach activities.
We are partnering with several community organizations in an effort to connect students and families to experiences beyond the classroom walls. Weekly themes will be incorporated into the learning stations and outreach activities. Additionally, students will earn points for participating in the program and reading books at home.
A district van will be located outside of our elementary buildings and middle school for approximately two hours, Monday through Friday, starting Monday, June 6. The last scheduled visit will be held on August 5. The district van will not host the program during the week of July 4 to 8. Families may sign up using the registration link that will be available in April 2022.
