Lake Erie algae cruise scheduled for August 6

An informational cruise to the Toledo Lighthouse to observe this year’s algae bloom will be Wednesday, August 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. The public is invited to the ticketed event.

The trip, including one-onone conversations with knowledgeable people, beverages and snacks, is organized by Lake Erie Waterkeeper, an advocacy group for clean water.

Now in its 40th year, 2025’s algal bloom is predicted to be moderate in severity. It typically covers hundreds of miles of Western Lake Erie, affecting waters in Ohio, Ontario and Michigan.

A previous algae attack in the 1970s was caused by phosphorus in laundry detergent, but the algae disappeared after manufacturers were pressured to eliminate the element from their products.

The current algae dilemma is believed to have a different cause: manure runoff from fields, produced by millions of cows, pigs and poultry growing in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Malodorous lake and river algae have resulted in the cancellation of water sports and recreation, sickened dogs and decreased property values. Scientists are researching the toxicity to humans inhaling algae.

Boarding on the Glass City Pearl will begin at 2 p.m., at the Toledo Yacht Club, 3900 North Summit Street, Toledo, returning about 4 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the trip will be rescheduled.

Purchase tickets, $40, at 419-367-1691 and if available, at the boat.
