Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District (Lucas SWCD), 3350 Hill Avenue, Suite K, Toledo, announced its upcoming classes and workshops.
•Tree basics: planting and care class is set for Wednesday, March 5, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Lucas SWCD office.
Learn the basics on tree planting, care and other maintenance to ensure a long, healthy life. Guest speaker will be Maxwell Schrimpf, CCF State Service Forester with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry.
In addition to tree planting and care, Schrimpf will discuss the different species offered in the district’s tree sale to help those who have not placed an order yet or who have specific questions.
•Make and take rain barrel workshop is planned for March 18 as a part of the Toledo/Lucas County Rain Garden Initiative.
Class will be held at the Maumee Division of Natural Resources building, 210 Illinois Avenue, Maumee. Cost is $40 per barrel. Sessions are at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. All materials and tools are provided. Each barrel has a 55-gallon capacity and must be taken home after the workshop. Register at LucasSWCD.org/ rbworkshop or call 419-8931966. Space is limited.
•Vermicomposting 101 class is set for March 27, at the district office, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Participants can make a bin, learn about indoor and outdoor composting, and leave with a ready-made vermicomposting container and a starter pack of worms.
Presenters will explain and give suggestions about composting. Cost is $50 and includes two storage-totes, worms and light refreshments. Class size is limited to 10 participants.
•Backyard conservation and native plant sale is planned for May 16, from 3 to 6 p.m. Shoppers can buy rain barrels, composting kits, bat shelters, garden signs, soil test kits and native plants. Items offered while supplies last. Find a plant list and updates on the website.
