Mastering movement: Holloway Elementary’s ‘Jump Rope Ninja’ transforms students

At Holloway Elementary, students are mastering more than just jump ropes. Through PE teacher Jude Perino’s addition with the Jump Rope Ninja program, they’re developing lifelong skills in confidence, focus and resilience. With colorful belt levels and a fun, dynamic structure, Jump Rope Ninja has become a hallmark of student engagement, sparking excitement across the school.

Concept Behind ‘Jump Rope Ninja:’ A Journey from White Belt to Black Belt Jump Rope Ninja offers students a fun and rewarding way to improve their jump roping skills, while climbing through a series of belt levels. Starting at white belt, students progress to more advanced levels, ultimately striving to earn their black belt. “Once they earn black belt, they receive a certificate, a jump rope and their name gets posted on our school’s hallway wall,” explained Perino. “It’s become a point of pride for the kids, and their achievements are even announced in our morning announcements.”

The belt levels are marked by colored self-adhesive tape wrapped around students’ wrists, a simple yet powerful reminder of their hard work and progress. “This program allows every student, regardless of their athletic ability, to feel a sense of accomplishment,” Perino added. “And it’s amazing to see how that success transfers beyond the gym.”

From Struggle to Triumph: The Power of Perseverance One story, in particular, showcases the transformational power of Jump Rope Ninja. “One of my students struggles to find success and enjoyment in team sports— he is currently at the developmental level with his manipulative skills,” shared Perino. “But after we started the jump rope program, that’s the one thing he got really good at. He practiced at home, learned the skills, and became a black belt. That accomplishment completely transformed him, inside and out.”

The student’s newfound skill gave him a much-needed boost in confidence. “It’s amazing to see how this success in jumping rope has flowed into other areas of his life—his studies, his friendships and his overall self-esteem,” said Perino. “Now he believes he’s good at things, and that mental confidence is making a big difference.”

Physical Fitness Meets Mental Fortitude: The Hidden Benefits of Jumping Rope Jumping rope isn’t just about physical agility—it’s also a mental workout. “Jumping rope requires concentration, rhythm and quick decision-making,” Perino explained. “The rhythmic nature of jumping not only improves cardiovascular health, endurance and coordination, but it also builds resilience. Overcoming the challenges of jumping rope helps students develop perseverance, focus and self-discipline.”

Beyond the physical and mental benefits, the program promotes social growth as well. “I’ve seen students helping one another during class, offering feedback and even forming friendly competitions to push each other to the next level,” Perino remarked. “It’s a beautiful thing when students make each other better.”

Inclusivity at Its Core: A Program for Every Skill Level

What makes Jump Rope Ninja particularly special is its inclusive nature. “Every student, no matter their fitness level, can participate and succeed,” said Perino. “Students can choose from various jumping options—some jump with the rope on the floor, others with a hula hoop or with a traditional jump rope. The Ninja belt levels are designed to gradually increase in difficulty, ensuring that all students, from beginners to advanced jumpers, feel challenged yet capable.”

This inclusive approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to achieve success and build confidence at their own pace. “It’s all about creating an environment where students feel empowered to keep pushing forward, even if they struggle at first,” Perino added.

Moments of Victory: Personal Triumphs in Jump Rope Ninja

Throughout the program, there have been countless moments of pride and achievement. Perino recalls a particularly memorable one: “I had a student who worked incredibly hard to earn his black belt. It took him several attempts, but when he finally got it, he raised his arms and jump rope above his head and shouted, ‘I AM POWERFUL!’ That’s when I knew this program was something special.”

Another success story involved two students who both earned their black belts in the same class. “One student had achieved 106 jumps, but another jumped even higher. The friendly competition that developed spurred both students to keep improving, and soon the entire class was joining in. It was such an inspiring moment—students making each other better.”

Overcoming Challenges and Future Plans Like any program, Jump Rope Ninja comes with its own set of challenges. “It’s time-consuming to count jumps, and I’m the only one testing the students,” Perino admitted. “I try to give students opportunities to test weekly during PE class, but it can be tough.”

There also have been practical challenges, like running out of tape. “I stocked up on a bunch of tape at the beginning of the year, and we’re already running low. But it’s a good problem to have because it means more students are progressing.”

Looking ahead, Perino is excited about the future of the program. “We’ve already added first, second and thirddegree black belts, but I’d love to see even more levels beyond that. Eventually, I’d like to incorporate jump rope routines for the older students or even start a before- or after-school jump rope club.”

Looking Beyond the Gym: A Lasting Impact on PE Curriculum As the Jump Rope Ninja program continues to grow, it’s leaving a lasting impact on Holloway Elementary’s PE curriculum. “It’s brought a new level of excitement to PE,” said Perino. “The students are more engaged, more motivated and many are practicing their jump rope skills at home.”

Ultimately, Jump Rope Ninja is more than just a fitness activity—it’s a gateway to building confidence, fostering resilience and promoting lifelong physical activity. “My hope is that students develop a positive relationship with movement and exercise, one that stays with them for life,” Perino said. “Jumping rope is a skill you can carry with you forever.”
