It’s for good reason that the Oak Openings region is considered “One of America’s Last Great Places,” putting it on par with Yellowstone and the Everglades in terms of national natural significance. Oak Openings is the big reason that Lucas County is home to more rare species than any other Ohio county by far.
Many of those rarities really come on as summer matures and heads into fall. Rare butterflies, for example, and the rare plants associated with the wet and dry prairies are on full display. Among those rare plants are a surprising variety of orchids, including the state-listed grass-pink shown here.
