Ahead of Memorial Day, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure reminds motorists to drive safely this summer.
“The days between Memorial Day and Labor Day–known as the 100 deadliest days of summer– are statistically the most dangerous for motor vehicle crashes on our roadways,” said Ferzan Ahmed, executive director of the turnpike commission. “The top risky driving behaviors to avoid include speeding, driving distracted, impaired and drowsy and not wearing seatbelts.”
The turnpike commission along with the Ohio Highway Patrol recognizes National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Observed in May as the riding season begins, Motorcycle Awareness Month was instituted by the National Safety Council.
Drivers and motorcyclists are reminded to exercise extra care and to respect and share the road.
Each year, motorcycles nationwide travel almost 22 million miles. Without the safety features in cars, motorcyclists and their passengers are at a high risk of serious, sometimes fatal injuries.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcyclists were 25 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than people in passenger cars. The turnpike commission also has joined Be Safe Together, a new global roadway safety campaign–led by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association–to promote safe driving habits behind the wheel. The commission is an IBTTA member.
