OPEN LETTER

Italian Bowl XLII Postscript

Sometimes, it’s all about being in the right place. As Springfield High School’s JROTC Cadets exited the field after presenting the colors, I got to hear the praise offered by a grateful crowd of Americans and Italians. I got to see how participating in the pregame and halftime festivities of Italian Bowl XLII mattered to these young leaders. I was involved that day as a member of the Italian Bowl XLII’s organizing committee, not in my capacity as Springfield’s community liaison. Perhaps earlier in the year (when their involvement was first proposed) I fell short in explaining the opportunity being offered. I watched as that realization set in–especially that this international event was being broadcast in the United States and Italy. These teenagers were more than just a little nervous. I got to listen as they received a pep talk from 1Sgt Thomas (calling in from out of town). I watched as Sgt. Blessing led their pre-game practice. I realized once again that these students are not waiting for the future to make a difference–they stepup, venture outside of their comfort zones and make their school district proud–today and every day. They represented our district in front of an international crowd of over 13,000 people. I was honored to watch them in action. Kristina White, Italian Bowl media director
