“Opening of the Port” will be held Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m., at Maumee River Yacht Club, 2735 Broadway Street, Toledo.
Hosting the event will be the Toledo Sailing Club, joined by Bay View Yacht Club, Maumee River Yacht Club and Toledo Yacht Club, known as the “4 Clubs,” as they were previously owned and leased by City of Toledo to each club years ago. These clubs purchased their club, making them privately owned.
The “Opening of the Port” is a long-standing tradition to announce the official opening of the waterways and boating season with members of the Associated Yacht Clubs and Interlake Yachting Association representing both Canada and the United States.
The public is invited as the clubs honor the commodores, past and present, hold a blessing of the boats and all boaters who navigate the local waterways in the western basin of the Maumee River, Lake Erie and the Great Lakes, including a ceremonial remembrance for those who lost their lives in the Great Lakes.
Following the ceremony there will be a boat parade.
