Plant exchanges planned

Two free plant exchanges are being planned by area master gardeners.

The first is set for Saturday, April 29, at the Wood County Fairgrounds, 13800 West Poe Road. The second opportunity will be May 6, at the Lucas County Fairgrounds, 2901 Key Street, Maumee. Both will be held rain or shine.

Visitors can drop off weedfree and labeled plants as well as gently-used gardening paraphernalia after 8:30 a.m. that will be organized into groups by master gardener volunteers. At 10 a.m., the swap/shop opens, and the event wraps up before 11 a.m.

Each adult may select a few plants simply for coming; those who bring items can take more. The key to selecting plants that will be successful is knowing how many hours of sunlight your garden plots receive: six or more hours a day is considered full sun, three to six is part-sun, and less than three hours is shade.

Hostas, daylilies, ornamental grass, ground covers, chives, canna tubers, saplings, raspberries and seeds are common at the exchange. There are always surprises, such as orchids, cactus and houseplants.

Master gardeners will be available at both events to answer questions.
