SHS introduces new SONO Latin taco bar

Springfield High School students have a fresh new flavor to enjoy at lunchtime with the opening of the SONO Latin line, a build-your-own Mexican taco bar that debuted on September 8.

The new line, named SONO: Celebrate Latin, offers students customizable meals with a rotating menu of proteins such as beef, chicken and barbacoa, paired with favorites like tortilla chips, fiesta rice, refried beans, queso blanco and shredded cheddar cheese.

Food Service Director Jamie Filipiak said the opening day buzz set the tone: “We are excited to mention that we are opening our SONO Latin line at Springfield High School. We hope that all of you get a chance to try this new exciting program in the lunchroom.”

The line has quickly become one of the most popular stops in the cafeteria. SHS Principal Sean Enck said, “The longest line we have right now during lunch—students are going back for seconds. They love making nachos or a bowl, adding chips, cheese, ground beef or chicken, even pork. This new addition has been hot.”

SHS Kitchen Manager Dawn Grant said the concept had been in the works for some time. She said, “Cafeteria staff are serving between 120 to 140 students daily, a testament to the popularity of the new option. We’ve been preparing for this addition for a while, and students absolutely love it. They enjoy building and creating their own meals, it’s fresh, and they love the taste. Last year we didn’t have enough employees to open a fourth line, but now we do and the kids are so excited.”

With the SONO Latin line, the SHS cafeteria now offers four full lunch lines for students, expanding variety and choice.

To keep things exciting, the SONO bar will feature a different protein each week. For Springfield students, lunch time just became more vibrant, flavorful and fun.
