SHS senior accepted to merchant marine academy

A Springfield High School senior is among seven students from Ohio’s Fifth Congressional District accepted to a U.S. military service academy. Veronica Florek of Maumee will be attending the U.S. Merchant Marine academy at Kings Point, New York.

On May 13, U.S. Congressman Bob Latta recognized and honored the students on their acceptance to one of the academies. The ceremony was held at the 180th Fighter Wing in Swanton. The students were nominated by Rep. Latta and have received offers of appointment for the Class of 2027 at their respective academies.

“Each year, I have the honor to nominate some of the best and brightest young men and women from Ohio’s Fifth District for consideration to our prestigious military service academies,” the congressman said. “This upcoming fall, seven students from our district will make their way to their respective academies. I wish each of them the best on this new adventure and commend them for their passion to serve their fellow countrymen and nation.”

In addition to Veronica, other students receiving appointments were U.S. Air Force Academy– Jossell Bakheet of Perrysburg and Colton Keefe, Bowling Green; U.S. Military Academy, West Point–Ansel Holt, Bowling Green; Brenna Payne, Luckey; and Dylan Rockey, Bryan, and U.S. Naval Academy–Parker Schofield, Maumee.
