SHS students receive OHSAA awards

A number of Springfield High School student athletes were recognized by the Ohio High School Athletic Association recently.

Receiving the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award were Sara Daney, Sarah Jewell and Sam Cubberly.

The award is named for Archie Griffin who was honored in 1998 with the OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award for his work in promoting sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in sports for many years. It is presented to students who display exemplary sportsmanship.

The OHSAA Courageous Student Award was given to Danny Bussell. The award brings credit to a student who has been involved in, or supportive of, an interscholastic athletic program, and who deserves recognition for courage. It is given to a student who has overcome great adversity in a positive way.

The National Federation of High School Associations Award of Excellence was presented to Marissa Longenecker and Eric Fox. These students are positive role models for others and encourage others to be positive role models. These students also embody good citizenship, good moral character and good sporting behavior.

Receiving he OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award was Ben Cubberly. The award is presented to a student for academic achievement while participating in sports. The criteria for this award is to have a combination of four or more varsity letters along with the highest cumulative GPA.

Athlete of the Year awards were given to Sydney Schwieterman and Brandon Langston. It is presented to students who have shown exemplary athletic performance throughout their high school careers. These athletes have earned at least four varsity letters in one or more sport(s) while in high school and are considered among “the best” at their individual sport(s) in the area.
