The American Academy of Dermatology SPOT Skin Cancer and Mercy Health Dermatology and Oncology have partnered to host a skin cancer screening event at St. Anne Hospital, 3404 West Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, on Saturday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are required and spaces are limited for this free event.
According to the American Cancer Society, close to 97,600 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year.
Additionally, about 7,990 people are expected to die of the disease in 2023. Prompt treatment is essential and regular skin exams can help lead to early detection.
“Skin cancer is one of the only cancers that can be seen on the surface of your skin and regular screens can help identify when something on the skin is changing,” said Erin Heuring, MD and board certified dermatologist at West Toledo Dermatology. “A skin cancer screening from a dermatologist is a painless, visual exam that only takes a few minutes, but it could save your life.”
Participants can ask about a specific spot that is causing them concern or they can choose to undergo a full skin exam. Because of the time necessary for the physicians to complete a full skin exam, appointments are mandatory. Registration closes on May 1.
