Springfield High School News

One of the great fun things about living in a community is Friday night. Football Friday for the principal though, there’s a lot of worries and a few headaches that go along with it. We’re always worried about the kids and the fans, traffic, gates, restrooms and whatnot. I have to say, most of the time on a Home Friday night, I am more than just a little stressed. With that Friday night tradition though, are so many cool things about the game and the band and, of course, senior nights happen each week. Sometimes though, things happen and no one even knows about it, hence my story here.

One of the cool things that Mr. Screptock started a few years ago was senior student section leaders. The leaders were designed to help us keep our kids having fun and protected at the same time, with a little bit of organization. It’s all kid driven and each week the kids choose a different theme and come out and add a little bit of fun to the game. Of course, the themes and things they come up with need to be moderated and checked every now and then, but for the most part, the kids do a great job.

This year is no exception. We have a great group of leaders and that group continues the tradition of creating a fun atmosphere for all to enjoy. I am so proud of them each week as they come up with their themes and look to enjoy our Friday night football games and what it means to just be in high school. But one of the cool things that the kids actually started was after each game. They began a clean-up crew. Yes, I said it and you read it correctly, a clean-up crew. After each game they go through the student section and pick up as much of the trash as they can. Now this year’s crew added a little something special to the clean up that I was not necessarily ready for.

Like I said at the top, I am wound way too tight with worry sometimes. This past Friday, at the end of the game, I was at the 30 yard line as the teams shook hands like I do in case something silly happens. As I was out there, I heard a crazy commotion down in the student section. Bottles are flying from the bleachers down to the bottom and there are general teenage noises and such and my spider sense begins to tingle. I see Mr. Rupp down there engaged in a conversation and bottle after bottle flying towards the front. I begin making my way down and as I get closer, I realize the student leaders from our spirit section are going row by row and cleaning up the trash and bottles. The noise is cheering as they shoot them down from several rows up trying to hit the garbage can. Those that miss the mark are quickly slam dunked by a bottom crew with great excitement. No prompting, just doing what is right.

Mr. Rupp snapped a picture of the clean-up crew when they were done. Needless to say, I owe them some pizza and some heartfelt thank yous. Even though their method of cleanup was a little teenagery–haha, I really enjoyed the fact that these kids took pride in their community and did such a great job. Great job to the student section leaders and the fan base this year.
