The Springfield Blue Devils boys soccer team has had another stellar season, securing their second consecutive Northern Lakes League (NLL) Cardinal Division championship. The Blue Devils finished league play with a strong 7-1-2 record, but their championship hopes came down to the wire in their final game against Bowling Green on October 8, at home.
Having lost to Bowling Green earlier in the season 14, the rematch was no sure thing. However, Springfield stepped up when it mattered most, claiming a decisive 41 victory at home. Senior defender Grant Sponseller played a crucial role in shutting down Bowling Green’s star forward Tomas Meek, keeping him from spoiling Springfield’s championship bid.
Springfield’s first goal came from senior midfielder Bryce Steinmiller off a wellplaced corner kick by Aiden Sloan. Jonny Bates added the second goal, which proved to be the game-winner. Insurance goals from Kyle Mortus and TJ Pappas secured the Blue Devils’ victory in front of a packed crowd.
This triumph marks Springfield’s second boys soccer title since 1982, and the team’s resilience and determination throughout the season have been inspiring. The Blue Devils are proud to call themselves back-to-back NLL champions.
The Blue Devils will enter the postseason in Division 3 for the first time, following the OHSAA’s recent restructuring of divisions. They were set to play Southview in the district semi-final on October 23, at Ottawa Hills High School. The Blue Devils are aiming to play in their first district championship game since 2014.
