Finding Ways
Dan Rather, now in his 90s, is a former journalist and nightly news anchor for CBS News. At the time he was starting his career, and for many years after, watching the 6 p.m. news on the television was an important part of the day for most Americans. Evening shows were the source of local, state, national and international updates, and brought families together after school and work days ended to learn, quite honestly, what was happening throughout the world. Although a lot has changed since Mr. Rather left his anchor desk, a quote attributed to him stands the test of time, “The dream begins most of the time with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes even poking you with a sharp stick called truth.” Last week, we cele
Last week, we celebrated the academic accomplishments of almost 500 students whose commitment to academic excellence placed them either on the academic honor roll (3.25 to 3.99 grade point average) or principal’s honor roll (4.0 or higher grade point average). While we certainly credit the students for choosing to put in the hard work and effort to attain honor roll/principal’s honor roll status, learning is rarely a solo venture, and most of our scholars are quick to thank their teachers and families for helping them to their, as Mr. Rather described it, “next plateau.” I would like to congratulate and celebrate these efforts. I also would like to take a minute to recognize the students who worked very hard to raise their marks from D’s to C’s, C’s to B’s and B’s to A’s. We have had to pivot several times this year and these efforts also deserve a little attention.
A list of all honorees can be received by emailing or calling our main office (chriskieffer@springfieldschools.org or 419-867-5633). While we made the difficult decision to not assemble all the students and celebrate their accomplishments before their families in the Tombaugh Auditorium, we did host the students at four different times for grade-level “cookies and hot chocolate” breaks. Thanks again to our academic boosters for their support and efforts to make the breaks memorable for the students.
Together, we are finding ways to carry on traditions and celebrate students’ accomplishments.
