On Thursday, September 8, Springfield High School sent six student athletes to represent the Blue Devils at the 2022 Northern Lakes League (NLL) Sportsmanship Conference, which was held at the Ward Pavilion at Wildwood Preserve MetroPark in Toledo.
Springfield’s representatives included Kelsey Brooks (volleyball, swimming, track and field), Isaac Evans (football, baseball), Lucien Flores (cross country, track and field), Camryn Hall (softball), Joey Keller (football, wrestling) and Evalyn Scott (cheer, dance, track and field). These representatives spent the day collaborating with student athletes from Anthony Wayne, Bowling Green, Maumee, Napoleon, Perrysburg, Sylvania Northview and Sylvania Southview.
In addition to working on updating the league’s definition of sportsmanship, they reflected on examples of what actions and behaviors constitute good sportsmanship, and they participated in team building exercises and introspective thinking to help build camaraderie and unity among the other member schools. The athletes helped build a stronger understanding of their personal values, raised awareness of what might be limiting their performance mentally and left with a better understanding of how values and sportsmanship connect to leadership. The NLL’s current definition of sportsmanship is, “Sportsmanship is upholding a competitive environment where respect, compassion and integrity are expected by all athletes, coaches, officials and spectators.”
The NLL Sportsmanship Conference has been organized and facilitated by representatives from Leadership Toledo (including our own Kristina White) since the conference was introduced in 2017. It is supported by Buckeye Broadband. Our district appreciates the region’s continued investment in our student athletes.
