This time of year is always so busy. Winter sports have begun, we have many concerts, activities, recognitions and, of course, the deliriousness that is the shopping season. With that said, all these good events deserve recognition and I’m a little bit behind on a few of my events, but I wanted to make sure that I got this important one in.
Last month the Springfield High School choir and the SHS chamber singers got together for their first trimester concert. This is not a new event, but what was new, and that I was so proud of, was the way that our students incorporated a mental health message into their performance. Each person who attended received a purple and blue ribbon reminding everyone about how important mental health is and it is all our duties to take care of each other. With the ribbon, each concert goer was reminded, that at times, we all may feel alone but that music can be a “light” and to never be afraid to reach out. Each music selection carried a reminder that we are not alone and added a powerful overtone to each song.
Our students incorporated this theme throughout the night, and to further show that “they” were not alone, one of the cool things they did was invite several teachers up on stage to sing with them in the closing song “You Will Be Found.” Mrs. Studebaker, Mrs. Corser, Mr. Dixon and Mr. Davidson did an amazing job. And yes I accepted the invitation and was on stage, and yes I apologize for my singing. But I had so much fun and appreciated so much students Brogan and Leon for helping me get through the night. It was a great night and I wanted to say thank you to all those students in the choirs and especially to Mrs. Scherger for leading the group with a strong message.
Choir students, your message was well received, appreciated and so timely. So in the spirit of the choir and the holiday season, please take care of each other and reach out if someone or yourself needs help. The holidays can be tough and, just like the song they chose to close the show, you will be found.
Great job to the Springfield choir.
