Springfield Middle School News

The Springfield Beautification Committee has been up and running, and brought back a building favorite– Ceiling Tile Student Art.

The members held their first round of inviting student input of the selection of tiles back in the fall. Thanks to the help of art teacher Chris Kaucher, the students wrapped-up their work and the selected tiles will be moving to the ceiling this week. The ultimate goal of the committee is to find ways to brighten the environment of Springfield Middle School, and a key component of that is making sure the students have the main say in the process. Current members of the committee include sixth graders Sawyer Scott, Zahra Edwards, Kai Walker, Owen Burns, Chloe Aubin and Rylee Whitaker. Seventh grade representatives include Bryson Benarth, Mariah Inthanaminth, Chloe Chappetta, Kendyl Delp-Hartbarger, Kaylee Kessler and Grayson Derr. From eighth grade, we have Brennan Cook, Gloria Trowbridge, Olivia Sosbe, Mason Amick, Orion Mendez and Serenity Hughes.

From the fall round of ceiling tile entries, there were four designs that emerged as the committee’s selections. The winning designs were created by Allison Altstaetter, Prescott Fischer, Emma Gerard, and Hudson Smith. The committee will be meeting in March to open the contest again for the spring. They also are exploring the idea of a contest that allows students to design and paint sidewalk squares to decorate the front of SMS. Watch for more on that soon.
