Springfield Middle School Band Wraps Up a Joyful December with Memorable Performances The Springfield Middle School music department celebrated a busy and rewarding December, highlighted by a series of festive performances that showcased the talents and dedication of its young musicians.
Sixth Grade Band and Choir Debut Concert On December 12, the sixth grade band and choir performed their first indoor concert of the season at the Springfield High School auditorium. The band demonstrated their remarkable progress in just four months, delighting the audience with classics like “Hot Cross Buns,” “Good King Wenceslas” and “Jingle Bells.” Families and friends were treated to an impressive performance that set the stage for many more to come.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Holiday Concert The following week, on December 18, the seventh and eighth grade band students took the stage at the SHS auditorium for their holiday concert. Their selections included seasonal favorites such as “Frosty the Snowman,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Ukrainian Bell Carol” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.”
A special feature of the evening was solo and trio performances by talented musicians: Alissa Allen, seventh grade, trombone; Ginevera Durdel, seventh grade, flute; Elidia Mendoza, seventh grade, flute, and Noah Hernandez, eighth grade, violin.
Reflecting on the event, music teacher Emily Golick shared, “One of my favorite moments was watching the kids’ reactions when they saw their family members out in the audience. A lot of students feel anxious or nervous before the concert, especially sixth graders when it’s their first time performing. But they instantly look calm and ready to go when they see their families waving at them. I love our Springfield community for always showing up and supporting our students.”
A standout moment occurred during the eighth grade band’s performance of “Ukrainian Bell Carol.” Every student played jingle bells in perfect synchronization, creating a magical and festive atmosphere. Golick noted, “Trying to get 62 students to play the jingle bells in time was a challenge, but they did a terrific job on stage.”
Introducing Fifth Graders to SMS Music Capping off the season, sixth-grade band and choir students performed for fifthgrade students from Holland Intermediate during an inschool presentation. This event introduced future musicians to the music opportunities awaiting them at Springfield Middle School. Fifth graders also learned about band and choir signups happening in February 2025, with instrument fittings scheduled for March.
Congratulations to All SMS Musicians The Springfield Middle School music department extends heartfelt congratulations to all the students who performed this season. Their hard work, enthusiasm and holiday spirit filled December with unforgettable music and community celebration.
