Springfield softball’s historic run to the state championship

Blue Devils capture community pride with final four and state title appearance

The energy was electric. With more than 10,000 fans packing the stands at Akron’s Firestone Stadium and media outlets from across the region on hand, Springfield High School’s Division III softball team took the field on June 7, to compete for a coveted state championship title—marking a remarkable close to an unforgettable season. Their road to the final began just one day prior, as the Blue Devils staged an impressive rally to defeat Boardman 3-1 in the Division III state semifinal on June 6. Overcoming an early deficit, Springfield surged ahead behind standout performances from its senior leaders, earning a place in the championship game.

The moment was especially meaningful for the team’s eight seniors, many of whom had experienced the 2022 state runner- up finish—a milestone that fueled this year’s drive for redemption.

“We’ve all been wanting to get back here since our freshman year,” said senior Callee Chappetta. “This has been our goal since the beginning of the season. It’s just so fun to be here.”

Led by head coach Rob Gwozdz, Springfield leaned on resilience, leadership and a relentless team spirit throughout the tournament run. The state berth was the fourth in program history—and a testament to the growth of a team that many had underestimated at the season’s start.

“It’s just our senior leadership— they’ve faced everything I could throw at them this year with the toughest schedule we could play,” said Coach Gwozdz. “It’s all paid off for them.”

Saturday’s state final saw Springfield face off against a formidable top-ranked Dover team. Despite the Blue Devils’ grit and heart, the game ended in a 10-0 victory for the Tornadoes.

Dover’s powerful hitting and pitching ultimately proved too strong, but the result did little to dampen the pride surrounding Springfield’s historic run.

“This year, not a lot of people expected us to get here,” said catcher Camryn Eckhart. “I’m really proud of everything we’ve shown. This isn’t just a team—it’s a family.”

The Blue Devils’ postseason journey had already captured statewide attention, including their thrilling regional final where Hannah Schlachter’s walk-off grand slam sealed a 6-5 victory and secured the team’s state tournament bid.

As senior Schlachter reflected after the final: “One game doesn’t define us. I think we proved a lot of people wrong all season. I’ll love this team for life.”

Springfield finishes the season with a 23-10 record, capping a four-year stretch that saw the senior class contribute to an extraordinary 97-26 team record.

As shortstop Camryn Hall summed it up: “It’s hard for me to talk, but I think that shows how much love we have for each other. It’s not just a team. It’s a family.”

With a deep roster of underclassmen ready to step forward, Springfield softball’s legacy— and future—looks as bright as ever.
