Springfield High School and St. John’s Jesuit High School students were among 14 northwest Ohio students recognized at the 2023 Chuck Ealey Foundation high school awards held April 16, at Promedica World Headquarters in downtown Toledo.
Springfield senior Elise Dodson was named a finalist in the essayist category of the awards program. Three other students–Morgan Amick, Corrie Brown and Connor Gilley–were recognized for completing an eight-month mentoring program to expand their personal growth and strengthen their servant leadership skills. Tommy Gallagher Jr., of St. John’s, received the overall male athlete award, a $500 scholarship.
Also named in their respective categories were:
•Female athlete–overall, Macey Wensink, Toledo Christian, $500 scholarship; Rakaisha Hall, Woodward; Liz Lathrop, Ottawa Hills; Natiah Nelson, Rogers; and Dekota Smith, Notre Dame.
•Male athlete–Ty’Waun Clark, Central Catholic; Simon Eze, Bowsher; Jackson Priestap, home schooled, and Jackson Wright, Fremont St. Joe.
•Essayists–overall, Joseph Brewster, Otsego, $500 scholarship; Maya Stepnick, Toledo Early College; Shea Vaquera, Perrysburg, and Katherine Wilt, Start.
In addition to the student recognitions, four adult influencers were celebrated. They are retiring Bowsher High School basketball coaches Darrell Dorn and Joe Guerrero, and Claire’s Day founders Brad and Julie Rubini.
