Toledo Rep. to present ‘On Golden Pond’ Oct. 24-Nov. 2

The Toledo Repertoire Theatre announces its upcoming production of “On Golden Pond” by Ernest Thompson, directed by Julie Zatko, running October 24 through November 2.

This tender and humorous love story follows Ethel and Norman Thayer as they return to their summer home on Golden Pond for the 48th year. Norman, a retired professor nearing 80, faces heart palpitations and a failing memory—but remains as tarttongued, sharp and eager for life as ever. His devoted wife, Ethel, 10 years younger and his perfect foil, delights in the small joys that continue to enrich their long life together.

Their summer is disrupted when their divorced, middleaged daughter Chelsea and her fiancé visit before departing for Europe, leaving his teenage son behind. The boy soon becomes the “grandchild” the Thayers had always longed for. Norman revels in fishing trips and book discussions with the teenager, while also learning lessons in modern slang and youthful perspective. By summer’s end, after a mild heart attack, Norman and Ethel face the passage of time with courage, humor and an abiding love— knowing the years have been good, and perhaps another summer still awaits.

Zatko shared her inspiration for staging this American classic: “I am thrilled to bring this classic to the Toledo Rep stage. The play serves as a great reminder of our need of communication, understanding and love.”

The cast features a talented ensemble of local actors: Gary Insch as Norman Thayer Jr., Nancy Wright as Ethel Thayer, Brittany Burns as Chelsea Thayer Wayne, Tori Bruce as Bill Ray, Lee Nicholas as Charlie Martin and Remington Spencer as Billy Ray Jr.

Performance dates are October 24, 25, 31 and November 1, at 7:30 p.m., and October 26 and November 2, at 2 p.m.

The Toledo Repertoire Theatre is at 16 Tenth Street, Toledo.
