Village council authorizes pay rate adjustments for array of positions

At the April 18 meeting, Holland Village council approved an ordinance, adjusting pay rates for a number of positions.

At a meeting earlier in the month, council conducted a reading only of the proposals due to a lack of councilmen at that session.

Mayor Lee Irons said pay rates were outdated and needed to be amended.

Included in the adjustments was the elimination of part-time terminology, said the mayor, noting that pay rates are not based on parttime or full-time status.

The hourly pay adjustments by department are:

•Police–chief, $35.86 starting, $36.36 after one year, and $36.86 after two years; lieutenant, $33.67 starting, $34.17 after one year and $34.67 after two years; sergeant, $31.67 starting, $32.17 after one year and $32.67 after two years; officer, $24.24 starting, $25.47 after one year, $26.69 after two years, $27.92 after three years, $29.14 after four years and $30.67 after five years; position of auxiliary police officer was deleted.

•Maintenance–superintendent, $29.89 starting, $30.39 after one year and $30.89 after two years; assistant superintendent, $28.45 starting, $28.95 after one year and $29.45 after two years; maintenance worker 1, $21.06 starting, $22.28 after one year, $23.50 after two years $24.73 after three years, $25.95 after four years and $27.45 after five years; and maintenance worker 2, $15.31 starting, $15.91 after one year, $16.50 after two years, $17.09 after three years, $17.69 after four years and $18.28 after five years; seasonal part-time and parttime maintenance positions would be eliminated.

•Office–clerk/treasurer, $23.03 starting, $24.56 after one year, $26.58 after two years, $26.71 after three years, $27.93 after four years, and $29.45 after five years; administrative assistant, $20.60 starting, $21.82 after one year, $23.05 after two years $24.27 after three years, $25.50 after four years and $26.99 after five years; office assistant, $17.75 starting, $18.25 after one year, $18.75 after two years $19.25 after three years, $19.75 after four years and $20.25 after five years; part-time office assistant would be deleted; village attorney, $80.26.

Council all at monthly pay rates–Mayor, $1,252.04; president of council, $443.19; council members, $405.17; plan commission, $45.

Picture in the Park

Mayor Irons announced that the Dwelling Place will be hosting Picture in the Park again this summer. The dates are Fridays, June 2, July 14 and August 4.

The monthly summer film series is held outdoors at Strawberry Acres Park and is free to attend. Movie goers are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show. Refreshments are provided at no cost.

The mayor noted that prior to the showing of the August film, there will be a Centennial Picnic to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the village. He invites neighbors to come to the park and help celebrate the historic occasion. Other Business In other business, council:

•Approved the purchase of stop sticks for the police department at a cost of $3,485.

•Heard from Lieutenant Jim Piotrowki that the new squad car is officially in service.

“We are waiting on delivery of another car. It has been built,” he said.

He told council that the new police vehicle is almost ready and when the last piece of accessory equipment arrives, the SUV will be put on the road.

Approved dental and optical insurance through January 1, 2025. Councilman Nate Gaubert said there is no increase in vision insurance and dental is going up by 2 percent from $866 to $888 per month.

•Heard from the mayor that this coming year is the last one in which the village will receive a subsidy to cover its portion of the 911 county consolidation fee. The village will be subsidized for 25 percent by the county and will pay the remainder.

He pointed out that members of the 911 commission are actively seeking other sources of funding since the expense is cost prohibitive for some jurisdictions.

•Gave a first reading, but took no action, on the village’s participation in the ODOT road salt contracts for the winter of 2023-24.

•Expressed appreciation to Walmart for donating a microwave, grill and tools to the police department.

Lt. Piotrowski said the department approached store managers about purchasing a microwave to replace their malfunctioning unit, and they offered to donate it and the other items.

•Heard from police Lieutenant Jim Piotrowski that the Flock cameras should be installed at different sites throughout the village by the end of this month.

•Paid bills totaling $939,474.

Council’s next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 2, in council chambers, 1245 Clarion Avenue, and is open to the public.
