Following a public hearing attended by one resident, Holland Village Council announced it is moving forward with the Hall Street project.
At the June 14 meeting, Mayor Lee Irons said the project will begin the second week of July with an anticipated completion of August 1, prior to the start of the 2022-23 school year.
The project entails the laying of all new asphalt down to the stone grade, sidewalks, curbs and new manhole covers.
Helms and Son Excavating will perform the work at a cost of $185,172.
Police Officer
A new police officer is joining the Holland department. Alexander Tonjes was hired as a full-time patrol officer on the recommendation of Chief Bob Reed and Lieutenant Jim Piotrowski. Officer Tonjes starting salary was set at $48,954.
In other police business, Councilman Scott Brown said the police personnel are currently qualifying with new handguns. “After qualifications are complete, the officers will begin using the new guns.”

In other business, council:
•Heard from Brenda Billow of Weatherstone Road in Whisperwood subdivision. Ms. Billow asked for clarifi cation on what is being done to address the issue with trees uprooting sidewalks.
Council president Ryan Spangler said the issue is on hold pending action from the homeowners association regarding replacement of any tree removed by the property owner. A timeline for tree removal and sidewalk repair has not been established.
•Announced that the switch replacement project for the village servers is delayed. “Perry proTech does not anticipate having switches from their supplier before January 2023,” Councilman Brown explained, adding, “This also will delay the phone system upgrade.”
•Authorized Mayor Irons to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Lucas County engineer’s office for adoption of the illicit discharge elimination regulations, soil erosion and sedimentation regulations and stormwater management plan.
•Learned that Mayor Irons attended a Regional Council of Governments 9-1- 1 meeting regarding proportioning of costs for dispatch services. “The village portion will be less than 1 percent of the total budget, which is currently unknown,” he said.
•Paid bills for the month totaling $70,251.
•Entered into executive session to discuss personnel, but took no action afterward.
The next village council meeting will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 12 at council chambers, 1245 Clarion Avenue, Holland, and is open to the public
