Dozens of youngsters enjoyed the free classes at Holloway Elementary School, where police, fire/EMS personnel and other instructors taught safety practices that children can use, especially when they are away from home or alone. Fire personnel focused on safety rules through hands-on activities, such as crafts. Elementary teachers reinforced safety rules through songs and books, and police officers taught students safety rules using props and the miniature Safety Town and sidewalks.
Above left, Private Shawn Griffin demonstrates some of the gear EMS personnel use when treating patients to volunteer Miley Hutchinson. Middle, Private Shelbie Flegal explains the gear a firefighter wears when entering a burning structure and the sound it makes when firefighters speak through the mask. Right, CJ Gorsuch gleefully dons a firefighter suit,
pretending to be the youngest member of the fire department.
