Metroparks acquires four parcels

At the July 27 meeting, the Metroparks Toledo park board approved four land acquisitions in several parts of Lucas County.

Two parcels were purchased adjacent to Glass City Metropark on Toledo’s east side. Both are at 0 Riverside Drive. Lot three, owned by Marina Lofts Acquisitions LLC, sits on 2.2879 acres and was purchased for $345,000. Lot four, owned by ProMedica Health Systems Inc, encompasses 0.9787 acres and was purchased for $232,536.

Clean Ohio Fund is reimbursing the park district for all acquisition-related expenses, explained Tim Schetter, director of natural resources. The acreage will be enhanced and reforested to create additional high quality natural areas at Glass City, he said The park board also ratified the purchase of 30 acres at 3909 South Berkey Southern Road, Swanton. Purchased for $225,000 from Steve Stockyard, Gloria Stubblefield and the estate of Christina M. Perkins, the acreage is in the Oak Openings corridor and “features a diverse mix of habitats including examples of the globally vulnerable Midwest Sand Barrens community,” Mr. Schetter said. Purchase price for the property is being offset by a grant of $182,250 from the Clean Ohio Fund.

The fourth acquisition is at 11219 Frankfort Road, Holland. Purchased from Tilmon Whitehead for $170,000, the 65-acre site also is in the Oak Openings corridor.

“A former residence and outbuildings on the property will be demolished later this summer,” the natural resources director said, adding, “Approximately seven acres of the property will be reforested in 2023.” A $138,750 grant from the Clean Ohio Fund was used to offset the purchase price.
