SCHOOL NEWS

From the Desk of Principal Andy Evans

Message to Holland Families,

I hope you found the new Jumpstart format as helpful as our teachers and staff. This allows the students a chance to relieve some of the nerves and meet the teacher or get a little more familiar with the building.

In this column you will find some updated information on arrival/dismissal, lunch and recess.

I want to highlight a few rules from the parent handbook that students need to follow during the school day.

•Students are not to bring in toys or sports equipment for recess.

•Students are not permitted to wear hoods, hats, coats, scarves or gloves in the school unless permitted by the principal.

•Student cell phones need to stay in their lockers and turned off. Parents will have to pick up phones, if confiscated for misuse.

•Students need to bring their own water bottles for the filling station. Cups will not be provided.

7:15 a.m.–drop off/doors open 7:30 a.m.–classes start 2:15 p.m.–dismissal Lunch times: 10:35 a.m. to 12:35 (30 minute blocks) Recess times: 10:15 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. (20 minute blocks) To contact the school, call 419-867-5655, and to phone in an absent student, 419-867-5657.

GAMES!

Our theme for the school year is GAMES! Goals And Motivation Equal Success.

We currently have three teams in fourth grade and four teams in fifth grade. Each team will have their own video game theme, and we hope it will provide some fun and healthy competition throughout the school year. Breakfast and Lunch Fees

Springfield Local Schools meal charges are as follows for elementary and intermediate schools: breakfast is $1.50 and lunch $3.25. For reduced price students, there is no charge for breakfast and cost is 40¢ for lunch.

Visit the food service department’s updated webpage at springfield-schools.org/ food-services-25fd31b5. Menus are posted, just click anywhere on the Nutrislice icon to select a school. Remember, too, that you can download the free Nutrislice app to have Springfield Local choices at your fingertips.

Arrival and Dismissal

The transportation department created a list of all the bus routes along with pick up and drop off times. Students going to the YMCA will ride bus 19. Dismissal is at 2:15 p.m. Holland students will be accompanied by staff members to the bus.

All students not riding the bus will dismiss at 2:15 out the main door in the front. Please do not stop in front of the school to drop off your child. Any changes in transportation need to be in writing.

If you are dropping off students in the morning, then the students will be released from their cars at 7:15 a.m.

Any student getting breakfast must go directly to the cafeteria for a grab and go breakfast.

The Holland Way and PBIS Rewards The Holland Way is the name for our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports framework (PBIS). Students share school-wide expectations in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, restroom, bus, and playground. These four expectations are as follows: be respectful, be responsible, be prepared and be safe.

PBIS Rewards

As the new school year kicks off with shiny new school supplies and big plans for the year, it’s also a good time to begin changing your school culture and climate. PBIS can help your school chart a new path toward improved behavior, effective social and emotional learning, and increased academic success. Employing the PBIS framework can make the task more manageable. The key to an effective PBIS implementation is an “all-in” mentality among teachers, parents, staff, guardians and administrators in a school. For PBIS to produce positive change in a school’s climate, it needs to be employed school-wide and with consistency.

Communication with Home

Involving families in the PBIS initiative will help students to practice positive behaviors outside the school. Parents and guardians can take an active role in reinforcing these behaviors. They also can be notified if their student is struggling with meeting the behavioral goals established by the schoolwide matrix. Families want to hear about the positive behaviors their students exhibit. Parents, please download the app for use. Parents will receive a letter and QR code the first week of school to set your child up. School Counseling Program

The school counseling program includes the following: short-term counseling, small group behavior support, behavior and personal development, and classroom-based lessons (skill building, career exploration, character based lessons). Holland Elementary’s school counselor is Grant Toepfer-Gaver, M. Ed. Contact him at 419-867-5654.
