Holloway Elementary SCHOOL NEWS

– 2023 Literacy Night was a HUGE Success

To say that the CandyLand themed literacy night at Holloway Elementary School was a huge success might be a bit of an understatement. Hundreds of families made their way through all the areas that celebrated the love of learning and reading including our book fair, the decorated hallways and all the activities that were held in the cafeteria. It was a wonderful evening of games, activities, snacks and reading.

Many hours of preparation went into making the evening go off without a hitch.

Our Holloway association of parents provided countless hours of volunteering and donations, our Holloway staff provided many volunteer hours as well, plus they contributed and created decorations (there is still glitter to remind us of all the fun). So many staff were in attendance that evening and we even enjoyed a lot of students from Springfield High School, who popped in to share their time and talents during the event.

It was an amazing night of community engagement and fun, and we are so glad to open our building for all to enjoy.

For Families of 2nd and 3rd Graders

Springfield Local Schools will embark on a new journey to improve foundational reading and increase reading outcomes for all students. In an effort to improve reading achievement and growth, we are providing professional development for the following educators during the week of May 15 to 19.

•General educators in 2nd and 3rd grades.

•Intervention specialists in kindergarten through 3rd grades.

•Intervention specialists (special education classrooms) in kindergarten through 5th grades.

From May 15 to 19, several of our educators in Springfield Local Schools will participate in Phonics First training through Brainspring Academy.

Therefore, classes will be canceled for all students in 2nd and 3rd grades (general education settings) and kindergarten through 5th grade (special education classrooms) during the week of May 15 to 19. Special education classrooms will notify families.

The teachers will participate in 30 hours of multisensory, Orton Gillingham professional development over the course of five full days.

The training will provide teachers with instructional strategies and materials to support whole-group and smallgroup classroom instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. Additionally, the training will fulfill the Ohio Department of Education’s Dyslexia mandate.
