Springfield High School News

The George Tombaugh Auditorium was almost at its capacity on March 30, as we celebrated 432 students for their scholastic accomplishments during the second trimester. On behalf of the Springfield High School faculty and staff, I would like one more time to recognize the choices that these students and their families made to commit to academic excellence. During the program, we also recognized six students with Ev Harris Awards for Excellence in Community Service.

I decided this week to borrow some of what Kristina White mentioned as she introduced the award recipients. Kristina used the word legacy several times. She talked about how the program took place in the George Tombaugh Auditorium–and the legacy of academic excellence that was imparted by our former superintendent that motivated the board of education to place his name on the facility. Kristina talked about how most of us are simple, ordinary folk whose choices allow us, even for the most briefest moments, to be seen by others as extraordinary. Dr. Tombaugh was one of those people. Francis Simon, for whom our National Honor Society chapter is named, was another. We rarely have the opportunity to meet our heroes–but we always have the opportunity to be a role model to those around us.

That is why I am so pleased to recognize young SHS leaders for their leadership, service and citizenship in Ev Harris’ name. Mr. Harris’s 50 years-long legacy of service to this district and community is unmatched and sets the highest standards for our students to emulate.

On that Thursday, Elise Dodson, Madeline Eckhart, Isaac Evans, Connor Gilley, Riley Snyder and Evalyn Scott added their names to the list of other SHS students to be recognized for excellence in servant leadership.

I would like to echo another thing Kristina said that day–there are a lot of deserving students who should be recognized. There is a nomination process that takes place three times each school year. There is a link on the SHS homepage of the website (drive.google.com/ file/d/13THxYPd89ge5hFPB 86BkOSuRF7YV03_/view) to download the form.

There is a lot to be proud of as we enter the final weeks of the 2022-23 school year. As I said at the assembly, I could not be more proud to be an SHS graduate and your principal.
