Library program shares the secret meaning of flowers

On April 19, participants of Holland Branch Library’s Victorian flower class learned about and made tussie-mussies, a small bouquet. Lin Germain, manager of Swesey Florist, Maumee, told the students the meanings of each of the flowers and greenery. In the 1800s, the hidden language of flowers could carry a message to those receiving them. For instance, carnations mean pride and beauty; ferns mean sincerity and roses represent love. Each student made a bouquet and wrapped the stems with ribbon to take home and enjoy.
