Twp. reviews sheriff’s report

At the May 22 meeting, the Springfield Township trustees reviewed the Lucas County sheriff’s office report on activity in the township over the past month.

Sergeant Mike Shrewsberry said the department continues to train personnel on the bicycle patrol. The deputies will peruse neighborhoods and patrol at fairs, parades and other events.

With warmer weather, he noted that patrols of neighborhoods have picked up during daytime hours when most people are at work. Thieves know when nobody is home, he said, adding, “most burglaries occur between 8 a.m and 4 p.m.”

The sergeant plans to have six officers trained for bike patrol. “Bikes are a really good thing for neighborhoods, because they approach much quieter.”

He presented the trustees with a monthly report by Aalea Robertson, community service officer. In the report, she noted that the department has been proactively patrolling roads for speeding vehicles and assisted with school traffic enforcement at the start and end of each school day.

Deputy Robertson continues to work on community outreach activities, including a free monthly public safety series. Upcoming topics are crime prevention through environmental design; see something, say something; pursuit 101; target hardening-holiday edition and initiating a neighborhood block watch.

A bike rodeo is planned for this summer at the high school parking lot and residents are invited to pedal with the police.

ProMedica also is hosting car seat events from 1 to 4 p.m. on select dates throughout the summer at township fire stations. The dates are June 20, July 19, August 29 and September 12.
