Springfield Middle School News

As the first trimester comes to a close, there is one group of students we want to acknowledge for a giant undertaking. For the first time in nearly 20 years, eighth graders had the opportunity to engage in a carpentry class, and could earn high school credit while doing so.

More than 20 students began their day at Springfield High School each morning with Mr. Jason Vida, a Penta teacher who works through SHS. The class is double blocked, so students do not return to Springfield Middle School until after 9 each morning.

Over the course of the trimester, the students went from building basic projects like a small tote box and a birdhouse, and concluded with a hinged small chest. Students progressed from utilizing basic tools like hammers and saws, to eventually being skilled with nail guns, mitre saws, table saws and belt sanders.

Because of their success, a new group of students is enrolled for second trimester.
