Springfield Middle School News

This past December has been a busy month for the music department at Springfield Middle School. On December 12, the sixth grade band and choir performed their very first indoor concert for their friends and family at the Springfield High School auditorium. This was a great opportunity for them to showcase their knowledge of what they have learned in the first four months of playing an instrument or singing as an ensemble. The band performed some of their favorite songs called “Hot Cross Buns” and “Rain, Rain,” and ended the program with playing “Jingle Bells” in a twopart harmony.

The next day on December 13, the seventh and eighth grade band musicians performed their holiday concert at the SHS auditorium. A few of their selections included “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” and “Sleigh Ride.” In addition to each of the ensembles performing their three pieces, the ensembles had individuals who performed either a solo or in a trio for the audience. Their names are: Noah Hernandez (seventh, violin), Kaylee Kessler (eighth, clarinet), Lilly Marksch (eighth, flute), Amira Smith (eighth, clarinet), Allison Altstaetter (eighth, vibraphone), Brayden Root (eighth, trombone) and Kalia Wilson (eighth, flute). Great job to all of these musicians on their terrific holiday performances.

To conclude the December performances, the seventh grade band and choir students put on an in-school concert for our fifth grade Holland students. The fifth grade students learned about the different music opportunities found at SMS and heard each of the ensembles perform some of their favorite songs. Students learned about each of the instruments and how they will have the opportunity to try out their favorite instruments at our spring band fitting nights in early March 2024. They learned that they will have a chance to play with the high school marching band during a varsity football game and travel to Cedar Point for a music competition. Fifth grade students will receive a paper at school to sign up for SMS band and choir in early February 2024 and the instrument fittings will happen in early March. We can not wait to meet all of our new Springfield musicians and congrats to all of the music students who performed this holiday season.
