A sidepath allowing pedestrians to safely walk across the Airport Highway overpass of I-475 is under construction in Springfield Township. Above, an intermediate course of asphalt is laid on the east side of the I-475 interchange.
According to the Lucas County engineer’s office, this side of the project did not require any lane restrictions, but as work shifts to the west side of the interchange, lane restrictions will likely be required during night hours.
The sidepath project is being constructed to enhance the safety of pedestrians along Airport Highway from West Mall Drive to Holland-Sylvania Road. It will run on the north side of Airport Highway near Spring Meadows, connecting with existing walkways over I-475. Pedestrians will use the current crossing on the east side ramp to cross Airport, and then link up with the new path on the south side of the highway to Holland Sylvania Road.
The project includes a new asphalt pavement side path, curb ramps, drainage improvements, earthwork and pavement markings. It is fully paid for with Transportation Alternatives Program funds received through the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments and through a joint cooperation agreement with Springfield Township.
