The Toledo Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a July 13 pedestrian crash on Centennial Road near Erie Street in Sylvania. The crash occurred at 10:56 p.m. shortly after a concert at Centennial Terrace.
Donald Christian, 54, of Lyons, was southbound on Centennial. Donald J. Fern, 78, and Therese M. Fern, 66, both of Swanton, were pedestrians crossing the road when they were struck by Christian’s Jeep, according to the highway patrol.
Christian was treated on scene along with a passenger. The Ferns were transported by ground ambulance to Toledo Hospital. Both later succumbed to their injuries.
Christian was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree felonies, and one count of operating a vehicle under the influence, a misdemeanor of the first degree.
He was arraigned at Sylvania Municipal Court where bond was set at $310,000, and he was remanded to the Lucas County Corrections Center.
A hearing will be held at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 24. If convicted on all counts, Christian faces 22 years in prison and fines of $40,000.
The OHP was assisted at the scene by the Sylvania Police Department and the city’s fire/EMS department.
The crash remains under investigation.
