Springfield High School News

This week I thought I would share just what a busy week it really was. Every week at the high school is extremely busy, but this was like championship week. We had a lot of good things going on and all of them could be a stand alone story in itself. The week was a lot of fun and I am so proud of our kids for how they represent our community.

Like most weeks, Monday kicked off with district semifinal volleyball! The Blue Devils found a way to get better each week and played themselves into the districts. The night did not end in our favor, but it was great to see our kids play at a high level, as we had many long rallies and proud moments.

Tuesday night saw our state qualifying band take over the SHS field house for their end of the year concert and recognition. In front of a full house, the marching band recapped the season and recognized numerous students, seniors and volunteers. I was so grateful to be in attendance as the parents acknowledged all the great kids, but also the staff. It was so nice to see those parents stand up and acknowledge Mr. Pennel and Mrs. Hoskins for all the work that they do.

Wednesday night we had all kinds of things, because both our soccer teams were playing in the district championship semifinals and activities at SHS. The Devil soccer teams didn’t prevail on this night, but we should still be really proud. To have both our teams playing at that level is not an easy task. Soccer in northwest Ohio is very competitive and our students were doing a great job and both teams had a great season.

Meanwhile, back on campus Wednesday night, we had our financial aid night. Bowling Green State University sent a great presenter to share information and help our parents and students get ready to apply for college.

Thursday continued the busy week with the JROTC promotion ceremony. This is one great night as each of our JROTC students who have put in the work, get recognized and promoted in rank in front of friends and family. This night is so powerful as you watch families pin the new ranks onto the coats of our students.

Then on Friday the Blue Devils football team wrapped up their season over at Whitmer. Again this night wasn’t our finest hour, but I was proud of our kids for staying the course and finishing the season.

On Saturday, though, we got back into championship form. Springfield has played host to the N.L.L. cheerleading championships for several years now. This year our cheerleaders again won the top prize to become back-toback champs. I was so proud to be there and see our kids do a great job and compete at the highest level. And by the way, a shout out to Coach Cantu, as I really felt like coach won the impromptu head coaches dance off. Take my word for it, she did a great job and would have won if it actually was turned over to voting. (Coach, thanks for making a fun moment for the kids.)

Saturday wasn’t over though, and I’m so pleased to announce Autumn Sowinski as a state qualifier in cross country. It is truly amazing to watch how her hard work has led to this moment. Autumn continues to improve each week, finishing fourth in a very competitive district to punch her ticket to the state competition. She deserves so much recognition because, again, in cross country, it’s how hard the individual works. Our community should be so proud to have Autumn represent us at state.

This past week for the Blue Devils wasn’t perfect, but there were a lot of bright spots. I know I did not share all the cool things that happen in a week, but everyone can appreciate how busy our students are. Thank you to all the athletes, the marching band, JROTC members, coaches, school counselors and administrators for supporting our community and representing us so well.
