Toledo Helps Ukraine hosts third cookie walk fund-raiser

Toledo Helps Ukraine, 4ua.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is hosting a cookie walk on Saturday, December 7, from 9 a.m. to noon (or sold out) at the Rossford Recreation Center, 400 Dixie Highway, Rossford. All proceeds will go to assist Toledo Helps Ukraine in its work for Ukrainians impacted by the war in Ukraine.

Visitors can select from hundreds of cookies including traditional Christmas cookies and Eastern European favorites like kolachy, along with nut and poppy seed rolls, and sweet raisin bread. Cookies will be available for $10 a dozen.

“As long as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues, we will continue to raise funds to assist Ukrainians who desperately need humanitarian help,” said Alona Matchenko, president, Toledo Helps Ukraine. “Ukrainians are known for their delicious baked goods and we are selling these as a reminder of the culture that Ukraine is trying hard to preserve.

“Currently over 14 million Ukrainians need humanitarian help,” said Matchenko, “particularly now as they face their third winter of war. In the first half of 2024, three times as many Ukrainians died as were born.”

Cookie donations also are greatly appreciated for the cookie walk. Donations of homemade cookies may be dropped off at the Rossford Recreation Center on Friday, December 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. Cookies should be packaged in disposable containers. There also will be handmade Christmas items for sale.

Toledo Helps Ukraine, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 22, 2022, has mobilized volunteers both locally and in Ukraine, collected and shipped more than $300,000 in medical supplies and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and coordinated all documents and paperwork for 18 Ukrainian refugee families (67 individuals total) to come to the United States, and assisted refugees in settling in Northwest Ohio and nearby communities.
