The 2025 Community Water Action Toledo (CWAT) training and kickoff event is Saturday, April 19, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Farnsworth Metropark’s Indianola shelter area. This event kicks off the third April through October sampling season of community- led water quality monitoring across northwest Ohio waterways. Farnsworth Metropark is at 8505 South River Road, Waterville.
Register at bit.ly/cwat25.
CWAT unites volunteers and partners–including Cleveland Water Alliance, Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network, Metroparks Toledo, the Toledo Zoo and Maumee Watershed Alliance–to monitor the health of local waterways. Just as we go to the doctors for checkups, it is important to monitor the vitals of the rivers, streams and creeks. This program is perfect for individual adult volunteers, families or pairs of volunteers who can make a once or twice a month commitment to sampling during the April to October sampling season.
Volunteers will:
•Choose from eight monitoring routes
•Get hands-on training with scientific tools
•Track key water quality indicators like pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen
•Help build baseline data to spot early signs of water issues Special guest Amy Wamsley, founder of Amy’s Swimventure, will share her story of training to swim the English Channel and mission to promote water conservation and women’s empowerment. If conditions allow, she will also complete a swim from Farnsworth Metropark to Waterworks Park during the event.
