We are less than a month away from one of our big activities of the year. Homecoming each year comes with a lot of pageantry, tradition, and a little bit of stress, at least for me anyway.
This year, I’m very excited about our continuing traditions and, as usual, I want to update parents on what is currently planned and encourage them to talk to students about enjoying the night and being safe.
This year, once again, there will soon be announced a theme to the week along with dress-up days, but the first real event of homecoming week is our annual powder puff game. But what many people don’t realize is the major part of the powder puff game is actually a fund-raiser for our prom. This activity, by far, brings in the most money for our junior/ senior prom held each year. We couldn’t do it without this event and it helps offset the cost of everything from the hall, activities, decorations and so on. So mark your calendars the Sunday before homecoming week to come out and support the junior/senior powder puff game and kick off Homecoming Week.
We’ll also do our school formal assembly. Again, during this time, one of the traditions is each of our senior candidates shares a speech about why they should be elected homecoming royalty. What I like about this activity is that many of the speeches really touch the hearts of our students and speak to the younger class about getting involved. Each speech shares what is great about Springfield and why high school is truly a rite of passage. Speeches are traditionally well done and encouraging to all. I can’t wait to hear this year’s.
Then on Thursday, we will have our annual senior sunrise. We’ve moved this to the Thursday of homecoming week, because it kind of completes the tradition. This is their last homecoming and roughly 120 kids will get up just to see the sunrise and be together. It’s a cool moment supported by our Academic and Activities Booster Club. Check out on Facebook how you can get involved and support our seniors.
Rounding out the week will be our homecoming pep assembly to give the football players, the band and the cheerleaders just a little extra incentive for the big game.
Friday night at halftime we will cap it off with the announcement of the homecoming court and the final selection of the homecoming royalty.
Saturday, we will welcome in probably close to 700 kids to dance the night away. Remember up above, where I said stressful for me. Well here it is! I want to remind all parents to take a few minutes and talk to their children about how to handle the night. Young people can make poor decisions. We all want to protect those young people, especially in these great moments of high school. Remind them of how to avoid bad situations, and that you’ll support them in getting out of bad situations. Each student needs to know that they can call home if things aren’t going their way or they’re somewhere where they shouldn’t be.
My final thought that I will share with our students is to always enjoy this moment. Sometimes during these big moments, one little thing goes wrong and it turns into way too much drama. I encourage students, regardless of how things go, to enjoy the moment. Be a kid for a little bit longer. Come into the gym, dance and just enjoy the night being a kid. Happy homecoming week—October 12 through the 18th.
