Dorr Elementary celebrates third-grade student whose curiosity inspires an entire school

A joy in every hallway

At Dorr Elementary, joy isn’t an occasional visitor, it shows up every morning with a backpack and a big smile.

His name is Austin, a thirdgrade student who has captured the hearts of Principal Jenna Moden, his teachers and his classmates in the school community at Dorr. Austin’s academic strengths are exceptional. His genuine joy, eagerness to connect, to learn and to share truly makes him unforgettable.

Austin has a passion for knowledge that stretches far beyond his grade level. He loves history, weather patterns, geography and maps. During our visit, Austin sat down in front of a blank outline of the United States. Without a single label in sight, he named almost every capital—confidently and correctly— relying solely on memory.

“He has a true photographic memory,” said Ms. Autumn Cornell, his intervention specialist and teacher. “He loves to learn, and he loves to share what he knows. He doesn’t consider age or role, if you’re standing near him, he’ll talk to you, connect with you and start teaching you something new.”

Austin’s enthusiasm is not limited to academics. He knows every staff member’s name— teachers, custodians, office staff, everyone. He cheers for classmates, celebrates school traditions and embraces school spirit with his whole heart.

Moden describes him as a bright spark in every room he enters.

“He brings so much energy into this school,” said Moden. “He absolutely loves school. If he could live here, he would. He’s a breath of fresh air, a joy for staff to see. When he walks in the hallways and yells hello by name, he makes our whole day.”

Books are Austin’s love language. He collects them— everything from weather books to music histories to atlases. When his grandparents traveled to Venezuela, they brought back souvenirs he still talks about proudly. He once lived in Sarasota, has traveled often and absorbs facts from everywhere he goes.

Cornell summed up what the staff feels: “He is happy-golucky, full of life and we are lucky to know him.”

Austin reminds everyone at Dorr Elementary that learning is not just something done at a desk it’s something you live. Through his curiosity, he inspires others to be curious, too. Through his joy, he reminds adults why they became educators in the first place.

At Dorr Elementary, Austin is not just a student.

He is a reminder of wonder. He is proof that every child has a gift worth celebrating.

And he is, without question, a joy in every hallway.
