This year in music class, students will have an opportunity to learn about different musicians throughout the school year as part of a yearlong unit called “Artist of the Month.” January’s artist of the month are the featured composers Rodgers and Hammerstein. Richard Rodgers was born June 28, 1902, in New York City, New York. His given name was Richard Charles Rodgers. He died: December 30, 1979, at the age of 77, in New York City.

Oscar Hammerstein was born July 12, 1895, also in New York City. His full name was Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II. He passed away on August 23, 1960, at the age of 65, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Their genre of music was musical theater. They were:

•Influential in developing musical theater as a unique genre of music.

•One of the best-known musical duos in history.

•Mr. Rodgers wrote lyrics and Mr. Hammerstein wrote the music.

•Most popular work is “Sound of Music.”
