Lucas County road projects approved by commissioners

Several Lucas County road projects are on tap for later this year.

At the February 16 meeting, the Wood County commissioners approved the plans, specifications and cost estimate for 5.81 miles of county roads.

The streets are Bancroft, 0.13 miles east of Centennial Road to 0.098 miles west of King; Brint, 0.69 miles east of Holt to .057 miles west of Centennial including Mitchaw to 0.04 miles north of Brint; Centennial, 0.046 miles north of Sylvania to 0.2167 miles north of Sylvania; Crissey, Bancroft to Central; Providence-Neapolis-Swanton, Hite Road to State Route 64, Center Avenue to Waterville-Neapolis Road, and Whiteford Road, Trellis Way to Alexis.

Joel Palermo, county construction engineer, estimates the cost at $2.6 million.

Other Business

In other business, the commissioners:

•Accepted a grant award of $43,291 for the Domestic Violence High Risk Team for the Toledo-Lucas County victim witness assistance program administered by the county prosecutor.

“This is a very important part of what the prosecutor’s office does,” said Administrator Megan Vahey Casiere.

•Entered into a one-year intergovernmental agreement with the county sheriff’s office for the provision of policing services at the Child Support Enforcement Agency. The cost for services through December 31 is not to exceed $97,824.

•Released a Community Housing Improvement Program mortgage for Patricia J. Osborne of Whitehouse. Ms. Casiere explained that the program provides loans for lowincome residents to rehabilitate their home.

The loan is paid back over a period of time. “Once they pay it back, we release the mortgage,” she said, adding, “This is a really good thing.”

•Approved an agreement for professional services with Mannik and Smith Group for $48,300. The firm will provide continued post-closure care and technical support through the end of 2021 for the former King Road landfill.

•Approved the purchase of UV disinfecting equipment from Pelton Environmental Products of Lewis Center, Ohio for the water resource recovery facility at a cost of $149,979.

•Accepted a $960,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation’s Safety + Justice Challenge for reforms that safely reduce the county’s jail population and address racial and ethnic disparities in the justice system.

•Renewed an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Toledo. The county will provide wellness program administrative services for Toledo at a cost of $77,250.

•Renewed for a fourth year an agreement with Firelands Vending for vending services at a number of locations in the county.

•Emerged from executive session and appointed Ronald Wells Jr. to fill the full-time position of executive assistant to Commissioner Gary Byers at a rate of $25.55 per hour.
